Law and English Tutor Alley

Description: Alley has a Bachelor in English Literature and has gone on to get her Diploma in Law. She specialises in tutoring Law and English amongst other subjects. Here is an outline of her tutor profile.

About Me

I graduated from Goldsmiths with a 2:1 BA in English Literature. Following this, I attended City Law School where I completed the Graduate Diploma in Law. The coursework I had written was awarded for the Annual Crime Prize judged by 6KBW Chambers. My essay was later published by The Journal of Criminal Law where it has remained in the list of Top 20 most read articles within the past six months.

Following completion of the Bar Professional Training Course (Grade = Very Competent), I was called to the Bar by the Honourable Society of the Middle Temple in 2018. I gained Outstanding marks in criminal law, among the highest recorded. My work on the miscarriage of justice cases was also sent to the Attorney-General for review.

Volunteer Work

After volunteering on the Grenfell Legal Team at the North Kensington Law Centre, I work with the team that ran their criminal department. After recruiting volunteers, my team and I represented a variety of clients for a multitude of serious offences. I also facilitated gang outreach programmes that focused on preventing youth violence.

City Hall and Richard Burgon MP invited me to consult on implementing measures to address underlying causes of offending. In recognition of my work, the Legal Aid Practitioner Group shortlisted me out of 800 nominations for Legal Aid Lawyer of the Year in Criminal Defence. I continue to provide support to the community, particularly assisting young people to realise their potential away from criminal activity.

Currently training with Amicus, which is a Charity that assists lawyers for justice on death row. I work in a remote placement with their affiliate US office. While this work is greatly rewarding; unfortunately, it is unpaid as legal services are costly and funding is scarce.

Therefore, I would like to use my acquired skills to help other young people achieve their dreams whilst continuing my pro bono work on death row.

Teaching Experience

I currently work as a private tutor. I teach literature to young students with challenging special needs. This role has given me insight into working with vulnerable young people and helping them achieve their potential. The severity of their condition has greatly enhanced my communication skills. When we began our lessons, the student was non-verbal. The student is now able to write their own poems using methods devised by me.

After completing my studies, I became a sessional lecturer in law at the Bloomsbury Institute (formerly London School of Business and Management). Other responsibilities included coaching the Moot Team on a weekly basis preparing them for national competition as well as supervising dissertations in criminal law. Many of the students I worked with achieved top grades and were able to proceed onto their desired courses for further qualification.

Mentorship

Whilst I was a law student, I was a Vocalise Mentor at HMP Feltham YOI. This involved teaching young offenders debating which called for reliability and empathy. The volatile environment required flexibility and the ability to excel at intellectual challenges under pressure. Dealing with sometimes difficult tempers taught me how to balance compassion with assertiveness to gain trust and respect. The individuals I coached defeated debate teams from the Universities of Bath, Bristol, and Cambridge.
