Teaching Comprehension

Description: In this blog article, qualified teacher Angie, shares with us her tools and strategies whilst teaching comprehension to young students.

Hello, my name is Angie and I am an experienced Primary School teacher.

One of the subjects I really enjoy teaching is reading and reading comprehension.

Often, the road to reading fluency and comprehension can be bumpy for children. This is especially true for children with ADHD and dyslexia.

Finding texts and books that engage them is the first hurdle.

Once they have found books that they can truly connect with, the process of reading comprehension is much smoother.

Tools and Strategies

Several tools and strategies can help improve a student’s ability to comprehend text, but first, it’s important to make sure they enjoy reading.

It might take a little time to find the right books.

Some students find the books they enjoy before starting school by visiting libraries, book fairs, or by adults reading their favourite books.

As teachers, we are often asked what type of books a student should read.

I always explain that it is important to find something they are interested in, starting with short stories, picture books, and short chapter books.

It is important not to overwhelm them.

Once students have discovered what they enjoy reading, it makes it easier for them to develop their comprehension skills with the tools, as enjoyment of reading engages them.

They are excited to share what they are reading.

Developing Skills

Having taught in class for many years and now transitioned to teaching online, getting to know my students’ likes and dislikes has been fundamental in developing reading and comprehension skills.

During class, we work on breaking down and decoding new words, definitions of new vocabulary, meaning, and pronunciation.

I write my own reading comprehension questions based on my knowledge of the student.

When teaching a new student, I choose age-appropriate texts. Once I get to know the students, they feel comfortable expressing their interests.

I then look for texts with themes they find interesting.

These strategies have worked well online, and I have seen children take leaps and bounds in reading fluency, comprehension skills, and writing.
