Tutor of The Month – Thanu, Latymer Upper Alumnus

Description: Thanu is one of our wonderful private Maths tutors that have demonstrated excellence and received great feedback from parents. This month we would like to honour and acknowledge Thanu’s dedication to his lessons as we ask him some questions related to his style of tuition.

What is your approach for teaching Maths?

My main approach consists of tackling a question with the student next to me, so that they are able to see which method to use with the right approach.

Then, I write up notes for the students which show them how to answer questions from that topic. After this, I allow them to make annotations on the notes (so they are able to understand it without any intervention from myself and are able to revise from it in my absence).

Once this is done, I provide them with questions which I want them to tackle. At first, I allow them to use the notes to answer questions but as they progress through questions, we put the notes away for future reference and they tackle the questions without it.

How do you ensure children are constantly making progress?

The best way I ensure that children are making progress is by constantly flicking between topics to ensure they have a good foundation when it comes to understanding Maths.

This, accompanied with frequent tests and short quizzes at the start of lessons (which test the topics that have been covered), allow me to keep an eye on my student’s progress and their understanding of topics that we have done together.

What do you think parents appreciate about you the most?

I think the trait which parents appreciate about me the most, is how I cater the lesson towards any worries or concerns that they have.

I also stress that they are free to contact me at any point during the week, not just “lesson time” in order to answer any queries, or if their child is stuck with any questions.

I believe that learning shouldn’t be restricted to just the hours within the lesson but the student should be able to contact their tutor at any time, in order to further their education.

What characteristics do you possess that make you a good tutor?

One thing which I pride myself on as a tutor is how I enjoy it. This is key to being a good tutor as it drives you to constantly improve and it provides you with traits such as patience as understanding.

I also pride myself in my communication and providing analogies, which convert seemingly difficult topics into easily interpreted pieces of information. This, combined with my passion in seeing students improve in their subjects, pushes me to always be working hard.

How do you help parents and children reach their goals?

The best way to accomplish this is to understand the goals of the parents and the children, whilst identifying what motivates and captivates the child.

Ensuring a balance where all these criteria are met, allows for a lesson which is both productive and fun. It keeps the parents happy and the child wanting to learn.
