Tips on writing a personal statement

It can seem like an impossible task at first when writing a personal statement that will make you stand out from the other thousands of applicants. What makes a successful personal statement? Should the emphasis be on the subject that you are applying for or your personal attributes?

Below are a few tips to help give you a better insight as to how to write a convincing and comprehensive personal statement in order to increase your chances of being invited for an interview.

1. Focus on your passion for the subject you have applied for

The admissions committee looks for candidates with an intrinsic passion and competence in the subject. You are encouraged to demonstrate this through activities you may have participated in relation to the subject, as well as evidence of academic excellence in this field. You should stress your strong desires in pursuing a career in this field, should this be the case, or at least express how this course will provide a strong platform in helping you achieve your future career. Universities want their students to be successful in completing the course, and so ultimately it is of paramount importance that you convey a great sense of dedication.

2. Talk about what differentiates you from other potential applicants.

Bearing in mind that there will be thousands of people who will also be applying to study the same course as you and they too will have a deep passion for the subject , it is important to make your application stand out by mentioning any special talents that you may have. You should include any impressive accomplishments or achievements – have you raised a significant amount of money for charity? Have you got a special talent in playing a musical instrument and performed at a theatre? Although some achievements may seem irrelevant to put down, these talents and skills will say a lot about your character. Try to keep this fairly minimal though – as a general guideline, limit this information to about 10% of your personal statement.

3. How well will you fit in the university?

Although you will be applying for more than one university, there will be reasons as to why you have chosen them. Perhaps these universities specialise in the field that you are applying for? Or you may be keen to engage in extra curricular activities that they offer. Try to be as specific as possible when mentioning how you feel you will fit in at the university, and why it would be perfect for you. For example, mention that you have researched into the society groups that the universities run and that you feel you would be keen to become a regular member. As important as it is for you to succeed at the university, equally important is how the university can bring out the best in you. Make sure you do thorough research into the universities you have applied for and discuss why you feel you would be successful should you be allocated a place.
