Studying abroad is becoming more popular nowadays. Nevertheless, it is always a dilemma when deciding whether one should embark on this journey or not. Indeed, studying abroad has obvious advantages, such as broadening one’s horizons, being exposed to better opportunities, and many more. However, do the benefits outweigh the disadvantages? For example being constantly away from loved ones and experiencing culture shock?
As a person who has been studying abroad almost half of his life, I would like to offer you my point of view and hopefully, help those who are considering to study abroad to come to a decision. I left my country to study abroad when I was fifteen. I remember feeling terribly excited by the fact that I got the amazing opportunity to study in Singapore, a country with one of the best education systems in the world. However, things did not go as smoothly in the beginning, as I found it difficult to find common ground with people whom I talk to. Also, English is not my mother tongue so I found it awkward having to express my thoughts and emotions.
I also experienced cultural shock. People did things differently than what I used to back at home. These things happen to everyone the first time one goes to study abroad to a differing extent, and it is, unfortunately, a part and parcel of the whole experience of studying abroad. Nevertheless, I only experienced those inconveniences temporarily.
Over time, I improved my English significantly, way more than I could have done by going to English classes back home. Also, I went the extra mile by actively meeting and conversing with people, instead of retreating into my own shell. As a result, I have become a more confident and outspoken individual. My experience goes to show that cultural difference and language barrier should not deter you to go and study abroad, as it is a valuable and life-transforming journey that I strongly believe everyone should experience in their life, if one has the opportunity to do so.
Studying abroad undoubtedly leads to a multitude of opportunities, not only for the individual but the host country as well. Take the United Kingdom as an example. It is undoubtedly one of the most popular destinations for people who wish to study abroad. By doing so, the United Kingdom attracts a diverse pool of talent into the country that contributes significantly to the economy. Numerous breakthroughs in scientific research are done by collaborations between UK and non-UK researchers.
Furthermore, these incoming international students broaden the horizons of the local students. The locals learn about other countries’ culture and practices, which encourage understanding and tolerance. It is no surprise that many of the world’s developed nations are hosts for many students coming from abroad. All in all, I strongly view that studying abroad is a transformative and valuable experience. Regardless of where you go to study, you will come back a better person than when you left, I am passionate about encouraging others to strongly consider studying abroad if you have the means. It can be incredibly character building and you can gain a lot of valuable experiences that can positively impact your life.
