My experience
My career as a private teacher over the last decade has allowed me to positively impact hundreds of children’s lives on an academic and personal level. I have vast experience working for a tutoring agencies as well as an independent private tutor, working both in London and internationally, which has allowed me to engage with clients and students from all walks of life.
I have devoted thousands of hours to private tutoring to date. After great success and finding a niche that I developed myself as an authority in, making a huge difference in young people’s lives, I knew that this was what I wanted to pursue a career in.
I have developed strong rapports the families I have worked with. The professional relationships and sometimes inevitably friendships I have built along the way has been humbling and rewarding. Throughout the years, I have gone on to help students achieve exceptional results that have had a direct positive impact on their future.
Some of my achievements include helping students achieve placements at some of London’s leading independent schools, including Westminster, City of London and St Pauls, not including some international placements I have had the pleasure and privilege of being engaged with.
I’ve worked with students of a variety of backgrounds and learning abilities. Some were already performing exceptionally well and wanted to develop further mastery in a particular subject, but many students I have worked with were initially extremely behind and lacked confidence and self belief.
Building a strong foundation
What I have realised is that in order to achieve long lasting, sustainable results, one must start with the right conditioning of mindset to prepare them for the road ahead. I like to start with the end in mind, create a road map, and instil unshakeable belief in them that whatever academic goals they desire are within reach and available to them. In addition, I like to teach children to fall in love with the process; something that many find difficult to believe can be possible at times but I have developed strategies in order to help them with this process. I’m very passionate about personal development and I teach students how to develop a “mastery mentality” to help them achieve the best results. Here’s how you can break through a plateau you or your child may be facing in education.
Whilst many teachers prefer to teach within a school, and there are many advantages of doing so, I decided to pursue my teaching profession privately because I felt I could devote more quality focus to my students rather than serve a higher volume of people in a more “diluted” manner.
A personal touch
Private tutoring is very different to teaching in a school; you are able to get to know individual students much more personally so you are able to understand and help them in more depth and subsequently serve them at a much higher level. I love to listen with the intent to understand what my individual students’ needs and desires are and how I can use this to help them achieve their specific goals.
I have many friends that are school teachers; they enjoy having a set routine and having the security and consistency of regular work. This can be desirable and preferable to someone who may value security over variety. Personally, I feel somewhat “confined” working within a school and I enjoy the adventure of engaging with families and having the flexibility of choosing my hours.
Having said this, this can sometimes mean that cancellations may occur, although fortunately in my experience, this has been very minimal, but that’s why working through a tutoring agency can be very beneficial. Should any unreasonable cancellations occur, our time is protected. Here are some benefits of operating through a tutoring agency.
Something else to bear in mind is that private tutoring is seasonal, and many families may want to go away on holiday which may mean that intermittently there may be periods that are quieter than usual (for example, during Christmas and summer holidays). Similarly, there are often busier periods during certain times of the year too, especially during the run up before exams.
In general, private tutoring can provide regular and consistent work with the majority of students wanting to have regular tuition on a weekly basis. Whilst working as a private teacher can provide a rewarding income to many that are looking for “flexible work” to supplement their studies or main income, teachers that operate with the intent to help and develop students from the inside out to really help them make a difference in their confidence and education, is what I feel differentiates a typical lecture style teacher to a tutor and mentor.
My intention
In order to be a successful private teacher, the core principles I like to adhere to are: to serve students from a place of wanting to genuinely guide them to a path of success, and to always try and go the extra mile and build long term sustainable relationships with people and be results orientated. Ultimately, understanding a client’s desires and challenges and in turn helping them achieve results is what defines a successful tutor.
