Mental Health Awareness in Children – Signs To Look For

Description: This article takes a look at some of the signs parents and tutors can look out for in young children, as well as the ways they can deal with such issues with mental health awareness.

According to the charity ‘Nip in the Bud’, around 1 in 10 children are diagnosed with mental health issues every year.

These issues can include OCD, depression, anxiety and ADHD

These are sometimes not obvious to parents. Unfortunately, these symptoms are often dismissed in children.

Signs of Mental Health Issues

Children suffering from OCD can show symptoms such as excessive concerns with intrusive thoughts, repetitive behaviours and hoarding items.

Depression can manifest in a number of ways – children may not be eating enough, or too much, they may exhibit boredom or worry, or take uncharacteristic risks.

Children with anxiety show intense fears or worries that impact their growth and wellbeing. They may also demonstrate safety behaviours, which are routines to make them feel ‘safe’.

Those with ADHD may not necessarily be hyperactive but may also struggle with attention.

These are not exhaustive lists of symptoms so it is important to look out for anything that is uncharacteristic of your child and their normal development.

What Can Tutors do to Help?

It is imperative that tutors are aware of these signs to prevent them from progressing into adolescence and adulthood.

Tutors can be effective in tackling these issues early on in the child’s development.

For example, tutors can track your child’s wellbeing in their weekly sessions, making notes of anything they deem to be uncharacteristic in their behaviour. Awareness of these symptoms can help to notify the parents and seek medical help.

Tutors working with children suffering from mental health issues should have greater empathy and patience in their teaching.

The Impact it Can Have

Children may take more time working through problem questions or require special needs, which tutors should be attentive toward.

During sessions, it is important for students to feel empowered and supported. Tutors can take extra steps to inspire and stimulate your child. This ensures their mental health has less of an impact on their education.

Telios Tutors places a strong emphasis on mental health awareness in children and many of our tutors have these skills. If your child requires extra support, please do not hesitate to contact us.
