Tutor of the Month – Ella

Description: Ella has demonstrated a high standard of excellence within her lessons. Here’s a Q&A we did with Ella to gain an insight to her teaching style and approach to tutoring.

What is your favourite thing about tutoring young people?

I love seeing young people reach their full potential which they may not be achieving in the traditional classroom environment. Working one on one with students can allow them to improve in areas they are struggling with at school by teaching them in ways that are suited to how they learn.

How do you ensure children are constantly making progress?

In each lesson, I introduce the new topic and start with simple examples and questions and gradually get harder throughout the lesson. This ensures that students understand what they have been taught but also are challenged. It also builds the child’s confidence as they can see how they are improving through the lesson. I then set homework which incorporates all they have learnt in the lesson so I can ensure the child has understood and not forgotten what they have learnt!

What do you think parents appreciate about you the most?

Parents like how I am very friendly with their children. They like how I am patient and explain concepts their children are finding difficult in simple ways. I also speak with the parents before I start tutoring a new student, to find out what they want to get out of tutoring sessions and if there are specific areas they would like me to work through. Parents also like how I am knowledgeable about the syllabus and curriculum for all ages.

What characteristics do you possess that make you a good tutor?

I am very patient and understand it may take some children longer than others to understand hard concepts. I am very friendly and want to make sure that the children have fun in their lessons whilst learning. I am highly reliable, I always start my lessons on time and response quickly when parents contact me.

How do you help parents and children reach their goals?

I would say the main way is through confidence! I believe that if I can build a child’s confidence and get them to love learning, then these are the first steps for them to achieve their goals!
