Description: Sofia is an Oxford Graduate who specialises in tutoring Maths and Chemistry. She particularly teaches 11+, GCSE and A-Level students.
About Me
My name is Sofia and I am a Maths tutor at Telios tutors. I am a recent Chemistry graduate of the University of Oxford with two years of tutoring experience.
I first started to enjoy maths and science when I started my GCSEs. Most definitely, I credit this to a fantastic maths teacher who used to make our lessons so interesting that I was encouraged to pick STEM subjects for my A-levels. This motivated me to study Chemistry at university.
My Passion
I’m passionate about spreading this enthusiasm for maths and science to my pupils. I believe the best way to be truly passionate about something is to understand it as fully as possible. I’ve always focused on trying to really grasp the key concepts of a new idea when learning. Through this, I have found that this helps further down the line when a topic becomes more complex. In the past, I have worked with students who were at very different levels in their understanding of maths. In order for them to be as successful as possible, I have had to alter the way I explain and teaching order to achieve this base level of understanding.
My Method
Through my experience, I also think that maths can be enjoyable. If one method of learning isn’t working so well, I think it’s worth trying something new to motivate yourself. Over the years I’ve tried out different learning techniques that I can share and I hope the enthusiasm I can bring to a lesson also helps to make them more fun!
When I first meet a new student, I start by going through some practise questions to see which areas they may find more challenging. I also ask them to talk me through their reasoning to see how they approach a question. Following this, together we can decide which areas need the most attention. We can create a plan for how we will tackle these topics. I believe that practice makes perfect, so I incorporate lots of practice questions into my lessons so we can put new knowledge into context.
Moreover, I have been very lucky throughout my academic life to have teachers who made learning enjoyable. I aspire to help others enjoy school as much as I did. It is incredibly rewarding to see a student achieve the best they can and to gain confidence as they realise their own potential.
