Conventionally, tips on how to succeed in anything looks something like this:
Work harder, get advice and get motivated.
These tips certainly have its place, and undoubtedly these techniques can show you how to succeed in many areas of life.
However, I am going to share with you the tools I personally used to succeed and have offered me incredible results. I will share with you my personal experiences that you can apply these and learn how to succeed in anything you put your mind to.
- Identify your “fire”
Your fire is your “why”. I genuinely believe that if your “why” is strong enough, the “how to” becomes very easy. Your “fire” is your burning desire to succeed that will carry you through challenges and obstacles, and no doubt you will face them. There have been studies that have shown how a parent has been able to successfully find “superhuman” strength to be able to lift a car up when their child is stuck underneath. If your fire is strong enough, you will find a way to make things happen. Identify what your fire is in any goal that you desire and remind yourself of why you decided to get started and understand that this truly is the foundation of how to succeed and to make even the least possible circumstances possible. The truth is, you DO have it in you, and success starts with belief, and belief comes from putting yourself out there and refusing to give up.
- Identify pain and pleasure points
As humans, our actions are naturally driven to attracting pleasure and avoiding pain. Change often happens when there our pain threshold supercedes our pleasure. We are often more inclined to avoiding pain at all costs more than attracting pleasure. For example, if the pain of not succeeding in something is so unbearable, we will undoubtedly find a way on how to succeed. Change “should” into “must”.
I’ll give you an example; if getting into medical school is something you desire, why MUST you go to medical school? Find out what will motivate you to carry you through. Just because your parents want you to is usually not a sufficient enough ‘pull factor’ for you this to be a sustainable compelling reason for you to continue.
- Be resourceful and adaptable
Success is not a smooth sailing process, and what we envision the path to success is very rarely the case. Rather, it is often a bumpy ride and many obstacles and challenges will arise along the way, some you may anticipate and some you may not. Thus, it is of paramount importance that one remains resourceful and be innovative when coming up with new ways to overcome these challenges. Adaptability is also a crucial skill that one must cultivate in order to achieve success because you will otherwise constantly suffer from disappointment. Adaptability means to overcome rigidity in your way of thinking that may be holding you back – be open-minded and explore options and opportunities and avenues along the way as they come.
- Learn to fall in love with the process
It’s great to have an end goal to work towards, and turning dreams into reality is something that we all desire. However, how effective is it to succeed and find success in anything if the process of bringing these goals to fruition is painful or too displeasing for you? In the example of getting excellent exam results, if you don’t love what you do and fall in love with the process, then you may only be able to have short-term goals because there is a lack of sustainability and long-term vision. You may ask “how can I enjoy writing an essay?” or “How can I benefit in learning the skills through this process?” There is always good in everything if we seek to find it. If we are struggling to find it, then perhaps we could make the process more fun. Working with an inspiring private tutor can take the stress of figuring it all out on your own, and inspire you in ways you may never thought was possible.
- Don’t be a perfectionist: build momentum
When we envision success, we often think of this huge goal or one major achievement. However, it’s actually an accumulation of many small habits of success carried out consistently over time. How to succeed in anything requires energy in the direction of what you desire, so avoid procrastination and just get started and slowly you will build new habits and create a compound effect towards the big goal. When we envision the big goal at the end, we also have a tendency to feel overwhelmed with the amount of work that we may need to do. Instead, focus more on developing long-term sustainable habits that will carry to forward.
