Improve your grammar.
Excellent English grammar is important because you will quickly understand what people are saying. You will quickly find the correct form of what you want to say. You can focus on pronunciation and developing fluency and confidence. To improve your grammar, learn from books that teach you the different forms of sentence structures and perform exercises and review any mistakes and learn from them.
Improve your vocabulary
Use a good dictionary to help you understand meanings of new words and record them. You can also try to access a thesaurus to help you explore other words with the same meaning. If you have good vocabulary you will have more words to form sentences. Try to refer to an advanced Oxford or Cambridge dictionary to help you. You can also download dictionary apps or translation apps on your smartphone if you have one to quickly review and record new words. Try to log down new words as you go so you can refer back to this as you keep learning new words, to help with retention.
Improve your listening skills.
If you improve your listening skills, you will understand what people are saying to you and then speak more fluently and help you with your pronunciation. You can do this by listening to a transcript on the screen, reading the transcript and record your voice, listen to your pronunciation and compare, then identify any mistakes and try to improve your pronunciation. You can do this by listening to the English radio and watch English TV with subtitles.
Prepare in advance.
Before you initiate a conversation, call a hotel to book a room, for example, you can prepare what you are going to say by planning ahead. Use a dictionary to help you if necessary. Think about possible questions you may be asked and prepare in advance. Try to anticipate what your listener may ask or respond with.
Learn the international phonetic alphabet.
The IPA helps us to pronounce a word correctly. It’s a system for representing different sounds with symbols. Once you become familiar with the sounds associated with the symbol, you can identify the pronunciation without having to necessarily listening to the words.
Think and talk to yourself in English, not in your native language.
This will force you to start thinking in English. If you are thinking in English, you will speak more fluently.
Practise with other students.
Go out and organise with other students and practise speaking English. Perhaps you could choose a theme such as holidays, sports, and then make an important rule: only speak in English, not in your native language.
Travel to English speaking countries.
By being in a country where English is the primary language used, you will be more likely to learn the language faster. The more frequently exposed and interactive you are in your English communication, the better you are likely to become.
Speak with native English speakers at least an hour a week.
The more frequently you do this, the more likely you will improve. Ask the other person to correct you if necessary. To find English native speakers, you could perhaps look for popular English games / sports such as cricket and football.
Do not worry about making mistakes.
Be confident in your approach and understand that to improve your English speaking skills, you have to learn from your mistakes and keep trying. Speaking and making a mistake is better than not speaking at all.
