Why Maths and Physics Should Be Taught Together

It’s common to see that students strong in Maths are strong in Physics also – at their core, both Maths and Physics are both about solving problems.

But in physics, the problems are rooted in the real world—how fast a ball falls, how electricity flows, or how planets orbit.

To describe these behaviours accurately, we need mathematical language.

 

An analogy I love is that Physics is the actual computer processing instructions, and Maths is the code that computes it.

 

For instance, Newton’s Second Law, F = ma, is a physics concept expressed entirely through maths.

To apply it, students need to be comfortable with algebra, rearranging equations, and interpreting units.

The deeper their mathematical understanding, the more fluently they can engage with physics problems.

 

Practical Tips for Students

1. Learn Formulas Through Derivation, Not Memorisation

Try to understand where formulas come from. For example, rather than just memorising the SUVAT equations, help them see how they are derived from the basic definitions of speed and acceleration.

This builds both conceptual understanding and memory.

2. Connect Topics Across Subjects

When studying geometry in maths, link it to physics topics like vectors or projectile motion.

Trigonometry isn’t just for right-angled triangles—it’s essential in understanding forces and components in physics.

 

I often ask: “How does this maths topic show up in your physics lessons?” Encouraging this reflection helps build connections.

 

 

3. Use Graphs to Tell a Story

Graphs are a key part of both subjects. In physics, they’re not just data—they tell the story of motion, energy, or forces.

Always interpret the gradients and areas under curves for both disciplines.

 

Try this: take a velocity-time graph and ask, ‘What does the slope mean? Is this linear or non-linear?’

 

4. Encourage Visualisation

Physics problems often benefit from a diagram. Encourage yourself to sketch situations -forces, motion paths, electric circuits – and label them with known values.

Using the environment around them often helps grasp a better understanding.

Common Challenges—and How to Overcome Them

“I can do the maths, but I don’t get the physics.”



This usually means the student hasn’t yet connected the formula to a real-world concept.

Try going back to the basics and asking them to explain what each variable represents physically, and what would happen if you changed it.

This suggests a need for more targeted maths practice within the physics context.

Focus on rearranging equations, unit conversions, and calculator use—skills that are essential but often overlooked in science lessons.
