Qualified Secondary School Teacher Heather

I attended Rossall School where I completed the International Baccalaureate and then went on to graduate from the University of Lancaster with a 2:1 BA (hons) in English Literature with Creative Writing and Practice before going on to complete my PGCE (with QTS) in Secondary English at Edge Hill University where I passed with an ‘outstanding’ accreditation. I have experience teaching to the 11+, K3-K4, and the English Equivalency tests.

During the day I teach both English Language and Literature at an all-boys school, where my results outweigh the national average for boys in English. Within the school, I run the ‘extensive writing’ programme for Year 8 students who struggle with punctuation and grammar and have seen phenomenal results.

I love learning, and continuously enhance my own professional development through courses and extra qualifications. Recently, I completed the Foundation course in Teaching Shakespeare with the RSC in Stratford which was invaluable in learning how to make Shakespeare not only accessible but fun for reluctant learners. I also completed a university online course in Understanding Autism, Asperger’s, and ADHD to enrich my experience of teaching SEN and enable me to use proven strategies to engage learners and ensure progress.

I believe a love of literature is the key to success for every child, no matter what age. Therefore, from my lessons you can expect passion, dedication, and tailored support for your child. (or adult!) I will start by gaging each students’ strengths and weaknesses from my own assessment, your feedback and feedback from schoolteachers. This will then ensure that the programme I create allows each individual student to achieve their best. I have an extensive knowledge of the AQA marking criteria, and data analysis which will allow me to provide exceptional exam preparation.

I like to provide exemplar responses to tasks and questions to really ‘show’ what is being asked. The ‘we do, ‘you do’, ‘I do’ approach works fantastically to remove the scaffolding at a differentiated rate for each student. I am really interested in cognitive theory, and through scaffolding lessons in this way and focusing on the zone of proximal development works. It ensures progression and I have proven this with my exam success.
