Telios Tutors was founded with a vision to positively impact and develop as many young people through education as possible. Great emphasis is placed on empowering students through authentic edification as opposed to simply imparting information.
The conventional business model for providing tutoring services can appear ‘transactional’ by trading a tutor’s expertise for their time. Contrary to the concept of merely hiring contractors, our team of private tutors are far more meaningful to me than just this; they are real-life representatives of Telios Tutors and thus it is essential that their efficiency in operation and code of ethics are align with our primary ethos.
My vision has always been to create a culture at Telios Tutors that engages with tutors who love to be in selfless service towards others; to work from the heart that is inclined towards kindness and empathy.
Academic skills and teaching experience are fundamental considerations during the recruitment process, but I would say that one’s core values and prime motivators in life are superior to the former. Skills and experience can always be developed, but attributes such as integrity, reliability and consistency are essential.
I love to build long-standing professional relationships with like-minded people, and what a genuine pleasure it is to learn what is at the core of every one of our tutors, their ‘why’ and how we can help drive their goals into fruition from this place of understanding.
Leadership has been an integral part of my role at Telios Tutors. I firmly believe that true leadership is achieved not by reducing people to one’s service, but in giving oneself in selfless service to them. The beauty of having a team of incredibly talented private tutors is not that it fulfils my mission but that I am able to offer opportunities to others that are not merely limited to financial.
The flexibility of being able to work from home for many of our online tutors to the development it offers many university graduates is something I feel privileged to have been entrusted with a platform that allows an unlimited amount of people to utilise.
Undoubtedly, the most satisfying part of running Telios Tutors is the real life-changing results it can offer young children and their parents through private tutoring. Last year, 100% of our 11+ students obtained entry to their first choice independent and grammar schools.
Our young dreamers have been given the opportunity to study at some of the capital’s leading educational institutions that will very likely provide a strong stepping stone towards future prospects. Hearing the pride in some of their parents’ voices (and a little relief!) made everything worthwhile for all parties involved.
Amongst many of our success stories, one in particular stands out in my mind. A young student of ours obtained entrance to Latymer Upper school on a 100% bursary and scholarship basis after successful completion of 11+ examinations and a series of interviews and meetings.
The biggest achievement was not necessarily in the tangible result in the form of an acceptance letter but the deeper inner-development within our student. The type of person he had to become to attain this result and the personal transformation was truly evident. Whilst it may appear that some children are just naturally’gifted’, for many of our students, they have had to diligently and persistently plant seeds on a daily basis to finally reap the rewards of their hard work.
Our student initially started tuition at a level that was significantly below the national average standards. Hundreds of hours of tuition combined with an intense work ethic was invested into making this possible.
Through observation over the years, it appears that often times a child has more potential than what sometimes even their parents believe they have. I have witnessed countless times that having someone truly believe in their child, they are able to borrow the tutor’s belief in their own child and thus tap into the child’s true potential.
Having someone who can anticipate the road ahead and being able to lead the way is something that is an essential quality in a good tutor. I invite parents that operate from this place to ask themselves where this is coming from. Having realistic expectations is a comfortable place, but its within uncomfortable situations where growth happens. I encourage parents to be adaptable and embrace innovations such as online tutoring and resist change to a degree to fully embrace all the possibilities it can provide for their child.
