After a decade of private tutoring experience, and having the privilege to be able to serve hundreds of students in my career, I have come across almost all types of scenarios in the education industry.
From the mother who is going through the 11+ process with their child for the first time to the college student who is applying to university, I have proven myself to be an authority and provided an unparalleled service to all my clients.
In addition, I have coached and mentored other tutors and have found a direct correlation between mindset and success.
Last year, 100% of my 11+ students obtained entry to some of London’s leading independent and grammar schools, including Latymer Upper, City of London, St Pauls, St Olave’s Grammar School to name a few.
Here are some results I have personally delivered:
- Helped children gain entry to some of London’s most prestigious and reputable independent and grammar secondary schools at an exceptionally high conversion rate
- Helped support new university graduates to become successful in job interviews
- Helped introduced tutors to clients at short notice in social and academic subjects including Art, English, Business Studies
- Mentored/advised hundreds of other tutors to become successful 1 to 1 home and online tutors and significantly increased their revenue as well as providing an exceptional service to our clients
- Delivered online tutoring using our interactive whiteboard with video conferencing which has revolutionised the tuition process and increased students’ engagement through this means
- Helped students throughout the application process and helped students become successful in obtaining bursaries and scholarships
- Helped students who have gone from being significantly below the national average to performing at the top 10% of the national population in English Language and Mathematics
- Provided clear and objective advice to parents based on experience and research that provided solutions to their problems and challenges
Now although I cannot take full credit for my students’ efforts and performance, there is undoubtedly a common denominator as to why an extremely high percentage have succeeded in the execution process – it is because they have developed a strong sense of self-awareness and mindset that has carried them through to achieve results. I like to authentically edify my students; speaking words of encouragement, using empowering language and believing in them has been fundamental to creating an abundant flow of positivity to allow students to thrive in ways they may never have thought was possible initially.
Several years ago, I embarked on a personal development journey and came to discover habits of ‘successful‘ people. I applied these daily habits and taught these to my students and found many of these skills to be transformational when applied effectively. I would like to share these with you, in hope that you too can benefit.
Below are some of the skills I have found to be fundamental in producing transformational results for my students.
Please note: this list is by no means exhaustive and only scratches the surface of what true ‘success’ entails:
- Develop a mastery mentality. To master education, one must immerse themselves in learning. Avoid dabbling and learning half-heartedly. Go above and beyond what is expected, do not be afraid to unbalance the scales.
- Pain & Pleasure points. As humans, we take action to become closer to pleasure and avoid pain. If your child doesn’t do their work properly, as a way to incentivise them to do it thoroughly, mention they will have to re-do it. Find out what motivates your child. Create ‘references’ that will associate good behaviour to reward.
- Develop the sense of urgency: When we have a strong “why”, the “how” follows naturally. Gain clarity on the purpose and follow through with this by using incentives: e.g. prizes
- Write down limiting beliefs and their references e.g. Lack of confidence (belief) due to a previous bad score (reference), not good at writing stories (belief) due to (reference) parent saying the child is a poor writer
- Destroy limiting beliefs by creating empowering references e.g. develop confidence by acknowledging good work, behaviour and attitude.
- Develop strong values and mindset: self-discipline, patience, coachability
In order to gain a transformation of results, students must:
- Plan their work and work their plan
- Have accountability
- Constantly review mistakes until they have mastered how to answer the question
- Aim higher: avoid doing the minimum; overdeliver and do not be afraid to ‘unbalance the scales’
- Take massive action; avoid procrastination and being a perfectionist at the beginning
- Avoid distractions to allow optimum concentration
- Work with an experienced tutor: a tutor can accelerate personal and academic development. Working with the right tutor is essential.
Here are some examples of some of the challenges parents often ask:
- My child has learning difficulties and has trouble focusing. How do I help?
- My child hates reading.
- I can’t get my child to love learning
- How long until I see real results?
- What is the best way to prepare for an exam?
- My child can’t seem to work well with me when I am teaching him.
- Am I expecting too much from my child and will they burn out?
- My child’s motivation doesn’t last very long, now he/she has reverted back to procrastination.
- My child hates school and is being bullied.
- Challenges & Solutions (continued).
- My child lacks confidence and competence in Maths
- My child struggles with Reading Comprehension and Creative Writing
- The 11+ exam preparation is very stressful. Do you have any advice?
CASE STUDY
Sarah, a 10-year-old girl, has learning difficulties is lacking motivation and confidence in her studies. She is preparing for her 11+ exams and really struggling to progress.
Possible limiting beliefs:
- learning difficulties mean she is unable to aim high and achieve excellence
- Label “learning difficulties” has created a reference that she may have a problem that puts her at a disadvantage
- Lack of confidence may have been supported by references e.g. bad score
- To make progress, she must create new supportive references to empower her belief system.
Working intimately with a personal tutor who can mentor her as well as educate and prepare her for the 11+ exams will not only encourage her and help create new references (appraisal, progress), it will accelerate her learning. An experienced tutor can anticipate the road ahead as they will have encountered and helped students like Sarah in the past. Working with a tutor all helps with accountability. Many parents have emphasised how beneficial having someone external who is experienced in the field of teaching has been to their relationship with their child. When parents teach their child, often times the dynamics at home is radically different compared to having someone else teach them.
