How to Achieve an A* in Physics and Maths A-Level

Description: Science and Maths Tutor Max states that although Physics and Maths are very similar his revision methods for each were quite different. Here is how he achieved an A* in Physics and Maths A-Level.

Understanding Content

In Physics, it’s very important that you understand the content and relationships between variables in equations. So much so it almost seems like common sense. This will allow you to answer on and off-topic questions much more easily.

Maths on the other hand requires a different approach, to revise only through practice questions. This is because as there’s almost nothing you’re actually required to understand mathematics A-Level, it’s mostly just a sequence of steps.

Effective Revision

The most important part for effective revision in both subjects is to revise only the sections you find difficult or that confuse you. This is harder than it sounds as parts you find easy will be rewarding to study. Whereas the parts you find more challenging will be downright frustrating. Revision periods also need to be set on a content basis rather than a timed basis. For example: finishing a sheet as opposed to working for one hour. This forces you to pay attention and be more efficient with your time.

Timing Is Key

Once you have a broad understanding of the subject run through as many past papers as you can get your hands on. Timing is key as it prepares you for the length of the exam. It also forces you to finish the paper in one sitting. After each paper run through with the mark scheme and create notes on all of your mistakes. The most effective way is to bullet-point each mark lost as stated on the mark scheme. It’s important to run through these regularly as it will fill in most of the gaps in your knowledge.

Once you complete enough past papers you will be able to list the marks awarded for certain questions. There is little point in writing them down. Instead run through them in your head and focus on the questions you find more challenging.

By following this in all my subjects, I was able to consistently score 90% or above in almost every past paper leading up to the exam. This boosted the confidence I had in my own abilities meaning I was less stressed and more comfortable in the final exam.
