Tutor of the Month – Sonali

Description: Maths, English and Science tutor Sonali has a full schedule of students she is currently working with, ranging from primary school students as young as 5 to secondary school students. She has had outstanding feedback from parents and this month we would like to give recognition to Sonali for her phenomenal dedication as an online private tutor. Here’s a Q&A we recently conducted with Sonali’s responses:

What is your favourite thing about tutoring young people?

My favourite thing about tutoring young people is seeing them reach their full potential. It is a wonderful feeling when a young person understands something and develops the confidence to think independently and answer questions without help!

Give us some examples of some academic and personal developments you’ve witnessed as a tutor with your students?

When I was tutoring previously, I was teaching a student who was very intelligent but was not getting the grades at school. He had the knowledge but had no experience with past papers so wasn’t sure what to expect in exam situations.

I worked with him and found my ability to teach developing as I found ways to relate questions and exam techniques to him and his likes and dislikes.

This is a method that I still use today, I try to be as relatable as possible because that is how kids learn. My student ended up getting A’s in Science and English GCSE

How do you ensure children are constantly making progress?

For me to be able to see that a child is making progress I always make sure I test them regularly. My methods usually involve teaching children a technique and doing some examples with them and then I ask them to complete a question alone with me supervising.

To ensure they don’t forget the techniques I assign similar questions for homework and make sure I test them on those questions weeks later. I also believe it’s important to ask the children how they think they are doing. If they feel more confident then I know they are making progress.

What do you think parents appreciate about you the most?

I think parents appreciate that I always keep them updated and keep a line of communication open between me and them so they can tell me any concerns they have. I like to make sure that parents know my plan for their children and I like to get their input too!

What characteristics do you possess that make you a good tutor?

I think my best quality as a tutor is that I am happy to explain things as many times as needed to make sure the techniques are learnt. I am also kind and approachable and I like to think that children feel like they are able to be honest with me when they find something difficult.

How do you help parents and children reach their goals?

I help children and parents reach their goals by setting smaller milestone goals first. When parents and children pass the smaller milestones it not only builds confidence, it also boosts productivity.

I like to understand what the goals of the parents and children are and I work through a plan with them on the best ways to achieve these goals.

Thank you very much for your hard work and dedication! We really appreciate you!
