Tutor of the Month – Anashe

Description: Maths, English and Science tutor Anashe has a full schedule of students she is currently working with, ranging from primary school students as young as 5 to secondary school students. She has had outstanding feedback from parents and this month we would like to give recognition to Anashe for her phenomenal dedication as an online private tutor. Here’s a Q&A we recently conducted with Anashe’s responses:

What is your favourite thing about tutoring young people?
My favourite thing about tutoring young people is finding the so-called, ‘click moment’. After building the all important foundational relationship with my pupils, we get to tackle everything together, and so figuring out the best course of action is the most satisfactory feeling. It could also be described as a eureka moment, and that’s when the best progress is made academically. I also love the natural inquisitive nature of young people, and encouraging them to be precocious in their curiosities.

What do you think parents appreciate about you the most?I believe that parents tend to appreciate how organised I am,  and how I implement my own strategies to best aid their children. For example, I tend to ask my students and their parents what their personal strengths are from the start, and followed by what they struggle with the most. By doing this, I make sure to prepare a personalised timetable for all of my students, that is ideal for them specifically. This way, I teach my pupils to also be organised, and disciplined in their routine for upcoming assessments or similar.

How do you ensure children are constantly making progress?

Completing timed tests, and assessing my students works helps me to keep track of their progress. I write feedback after any formal work I want handed in which details ‘what they did well’ and ‘areas for improvement next time’, and in this way, I can ensure that they are using the feedback from the previous work to better their work the next time. Open communication with my students also ensures that I can understand if there is something we need to focus on, to ensure that we have no gaps in understanding of the content.

What characteristics do you possess that make you a good tutor?

I believe the fact that I am hard working acts as an exemplar to my students, who not only actively see the benefits from my detailed feedback of work, and intrinsic lesson plans, but also passively – in the sense that I can show to my students that they can also work hard and achieve as much, if not more than me in time.

I am incredibly patient with my students, which means that I attempt various means of explanations to make sure the information sticks with them. I allow time to understand how my students work things out in their heads, by encouraging them to vocalise themselves working things out – so I can spot any potential errors, or simply be mindful when deciding how to explain certain concepts; by recognising how they understand things already.

How do you help parents and children reach their goals?

Forecasting and planning for upcoming assessments allows the students and their parents to be sure that the goal is always in mind. Careful planning for regular lessons and courses of action means that we can take logical and practical steps towards reaching their goals.

I also communicate with parents on the best available resources for their child, and how they too, can encourage their children to be the most productive and time efficient in their learning.
