Description: In this article, we share valuable insights from a Child Psychologist for parents whose children may be struggling academically
In our work supporting families and students, we’re often asked the same heartfelt question:
“What does my child really need to thrive?”
So we spoke with a trusted child psychologist to unpack the hidden patterns behind academic struggles, low motivation, emotional outbursts, and even the bright, high-achieving students who quietly burn out.
Here’s what every parent should know (but many don’t hear often enough):
💡 Emotional Safety Comes First
No matter how strong your child’s grades are, their emotional foundation is what determines long-term success.
Children need to feel safe, seen, and supported, even when they fail.
What to try: Instead of focusing on “Why didn’t you get a better mark?” ask “What do you think helped or didn’t help this time?”
The shift from judgment to curiosity makes all the difference.
🎯 Kids Need Purpose, Not Just Pressure
A big source of school-related anxiety stems from a lack of purpose.
When children feel like they’re working for something, not just to avoid failure or please adults, they become more engaged.
What to try: Help them connect the dots. “You enjoy building things, and strong maths skills will really help you in that.”
Purpose creates natural motivation.
📉 Overscheduling Can Backfire
Many well-meaning parents try to give their children “every opportunity,” packing their week with clubs, sports, and tuition.
But often, what children need most is space to reflect, rest, and just be.
What to try: If your child is moody, unmotivated or resistant, check if they’re overbooked. Rest is productive too.
🗣️ Listening > Lecturing
Children (especially teens) are often more emotionally aware than we give them credit for. But they’re also extremely sensitive to tone.
Lecturing shuts them down. Listening opens them up.
What to try: Next time your child shares something, even casually, avoid jumping into advice. Simply respond with: “That sounds tough. Want to talk more about it?”
💬 The Power of One Trusted Adult
Research shows that every child who overcomes adversity has at least one consistent adult who believes in them.
It doesn’t have to be a parent. A tutor, coach, or mentor can be that person.
Our 1-on-1 tutors don’t just focus on marks, they help build confidence, motivation, and a mindset for lifelong success.
Many parents tell us it’s the one part of their child’s week they truly look forward to.
👀 What We See Behind the Scenes
Every day, we speak to families dealing with:
- Low self-esteem despite good grades
- Fear of failure or perfectionism
- Reluctance to try
- Emotional shutdown
- Lack of motivation or direction
These aren’t signs of laziness, they’re often signs of overwhelm or disconnection.
When approached with understanding and the right support, we see transformations every single week.
🧭 What Can You Do Next?
Consider what’s underneath the behaviour, not just the behaviour itself.
Remember: You’re not alone. These are incredibly common struggles.
