Private Science Tutor Lana M

Description: Lana is a science tutor and pursuing a degree in Chemistry at King’s College London. She is an A Level Chemistry tutor, biology tutor and maths tutor both in person and online. An aspiring headteacher and full of love for education – both in consuming and sharing it, here is a snippet of her tutor profile.

While the degree primarily covers chemistry content, I am also taking cells and physical chemistry modules which allow me to revise and recap biology and physics content as well. Meanwhile, my laboratory modules ensure that I understand real life applications of the content, not just within the scope of an exam. I have an interest in languages and cultures, which is why I look Spanish and geography A-levels alongside my biology and chemistry A-levels, and I am currently studying Arabic. My enjoyment as a science tutor is largely due to how current and familiar with the current British education system, having recently gone through it myself.

I love exploring films/music/artists from other cultures- especially in the Hispanic and Arab world. Furthermore, given my interest in cultures I love travelling. I recently interned in a finance advisory company in Hong Kong which gave me a real understanding of east Asian culture and work culture. While the finance sector is not the career path I want to take, the experience will be useful later on as I want to work in the education sector, possibly as a lecturer or a headteacher; I believe that education is more than just a textbook answer, although sometimes a textbook answer is needed to get the desired grades which ultimately open up opportunities for students.

Whilst completing my A-levels at sixth form, my teacher entrusted me to hold 1:1 and small group lessons with students who needed more support with their Spanish GCSEs. The support lessons involved recapping grammar rules, 1:1 speaking practice and exam mocks. Furthermore, I was an A level chemistry tutor as well as a biology tutor for a student who was preparing for her science GCSEs. she found that talking through diagrams really aided her learning as it solidified her understanding of processes, reactions and key concepts.

We frequently tackled exam questions together, highlighting keywords and command words, and then answering them in a concise manner including key phrases/scientific terminology that the examiners are looking out for. She obtained AAA*A for her A-levels and is now studying Medicine at university.

Over two years ago, I also started tutored an Iraqi immigrant who was in Year 6 at the time. She knew very little English to begin with. Initially, we focused on English reading, writing and grammar to get his language up to speed and I would identify words that are used daily that he should independently revise the spellings/meanings of.

Thankfully his English has improved drastically, and I am now his science tutor also – I explain key concepts and how to apply them to real-life situations so that he can get a better understanding. I have taught him useful exam techniques, such as the differences between the command words (e.g. evaluate and discuss) and how questions should be answered accordingly.

After exam practice, we identify weak areas together and he then recaps them independently, using textbooks and websites that I have suggested, so that I can test him later. I am proud to say he has now caught up with the rest of his classmates and is consistently achieving above average marks.
