Private Maths, English & Science Tutor Katie

Description: Katie has a degree in Biomedical Science, currently doing an Msc in Science Communication. She has a particular interest in Biology – especially neuroscience. Here is a snippet of her tutor profile.

I take enjoyment out of teaching new things to others, which is why I was drawn towards Science Communication. My Msc is helping me to develop skills in explaining complex topics to a wide variety of audiences including university students, lay audiences and young children. So far I have done this through the design of a museum exhibit, photography and by producing an educational video.

Outside of academia, I have a love for dance! I have danced since I was 4 years old and have continued this hobby throughout university. Whilst being part of the University of Sheffield Dance Society I have had the opportunity to teach both intermediate and advanced modern classes.

Over the last academic year, I have had the pleasure of being the Vice President and Inclusions officer, where I organised dance shows, helped our President run the society, and ensured that all of our members were represented equally, as well as have the same opportunities as others.

My first teaching experience was in 2011, where I worked for a week at my old primary school. It was this that sparked my interest and enjoyment of helping others learn! In September 2015 I was employed by Explore Learning, where I worked as a part time Tutor for a year leading up to starting my degree.

Here I supported the learning of children from the ages of 5 to 16 with their Maths and English. I would be in charge of 6 children per session, where they would work through a set programme, tailored to the areas which they need more support on.

After each session, I would provide verbal and written feedback to the parents about the work that their child completed. A valuable skill I gained was how to explain challenging concepts to children at different ages and learning levels, tailoring the ways to how individual children learned best.

I also learned and developed my skill in managing a classroom environment, whilst keeping the children engaged, as well as ensuring learning was fun and enjoyable.

I also helped to run a creative writing session for children aged 11+. This lesson would work on developing their writing technique in preparation for entering their GCSE years.

Every session would be focused on different writing styles e.g. fiction, non-fiction, 1st/2nd/3rd person etc. As well as this, we aimed to improve the range of vocabulary that our students would use, as well as improving their grammar and sentence structure.
