PhD History Tutor Robert

Description: PhD History tutor Robert specialises in GCSE and A Level History for all major examination boards. Here is an outline of his tutor profile.

About Me

Hello, my name is Robert and I am currently working towards my PhD in History at the University of Sussex.

My thesis is analysing how children and adolescents in urban and rural areas of England experienced the Second World War through youth movements and how the war affected their engagement with the ideas of citizenship and community.

History has always been a great interest of mine as my Dad introduced me to the subject when I was a child through the Napoleonic War.

My interest sparked especially when it came to the 1805 Battle of Trafalgar and the 1815 Battle of Waterloo.

Since then, my fascination with history has continued to develop into different eras and I now specialise in Modern British History.

I specifically focus on the First and Second World Wars, looking into the social aspects of the conflicts which also include the Home Front.

Nevertheless, I also have an interest in the British and French Empires as this was something that did throughout my BA and MA degrees at the University of Winchester.

Interests

Through these modules, I am more than confident to teach students about the colonisation and decolonisation of the indigenous populations that were controlled by the British and French empires.

Outside of history, I also have an interest in music where I not only play the cello – where I am in grade 5 but can play to grade 7 standard – but have sung in multiple choirs ranging from the classical style to musical theatre and rock, pop and soul choirs.

Through the University of Winchester’s King Alfred Singers, I have also participated in the Cathedral Group’s Choir Festival where we have performed a range of choral music from Berlioz’s Requiem to Monteverdi’s Vespers.

These events have been amazing to participate and I hope I will be able to join more of them in the future.

Teaching Experience

The skills that I have been able to develop during my working life in various education environments will become very useful for being a tutor, as I have been able to demonstrate successful communication and organisation skills.

I also have experience in marking essays. During my MA at the University of Winchester, I would mark undergraduate essays as part of my course.

For instance, students who were writing their undergraduate dissertations would send me a draft of their work and I would go through the document, making comments about what they could improve on and any grammatical mistakes they have made.

This will be of great use when it comes to tutoring as I will be able to successfully identify any corrections that need to be made.
