Description: David has a legal background and is an LPC lawyer. He has a teaching qualification and has taught at three British Universities. Furthermore, he is also a corporate trainer and mentor who has trained teachers. He also has experience teaching oversees and had the responsibility of being in charge of university preparatory teaching. Here is a snippet of law tutor David’s tutor profile.
Legal Profession
As a former lawyer, I have sought in my career as a lecturer to bring in elements of my previous vocation to students. One of the perennial problems students complain about is a lack insight in a vocation.
As a qualified lecturer I managed to address the above issue while teaching at Middlesex University. The following paragraphs will discuss my plans and work done at my current workplace to improve independent learning among students.
I have worked for Her Majesty’s Treasury Solicitor and then moved to private practice. In 2008 opened my own firm and ran another office in St. Albans. I then decided to quit being a lawyer to become a law Lecturer. I have taught at two British universities in Mauritius. At both institutions, lecturing on the LLB programme.
As a continuation of my Post Graduate Diploma in Higher Education (PGCE) which I obtained in January 2015. This will provide me with a more in depth insight into education and teaching as an LPC tutor.
In 2014 and 2016 I set up Employment Learning Centres for both Middlesex and Aberystwyth Universities. This comprised of lecturers with other vocational experience; it aims to bolster student confidence and skills on a range of issues. Free courses were held on the following:
• Negotiation skills
• Presentation
• Interview Preparation
• How to network
• CV drafting
• Advocacy and mooting
I liaised with all the faculties and student bodies to inform students of events/seminars/clinics. The management of the university fully backed the ELC and regular meetings are held to focus on key objectives.
Internship
As part of the ELC’s activities, I am working on an internship programme for students. This has involved visiting large, usually multi-national employers, to explain the vision of the university that is to provide well rounded and commercially aware students for the workplace.
To date I am in negotiation with an international British bank who will be providing internship places for our students. This is of tremendous benefit to students, many of which have little or no work experience. Further marketing opportunities for the university are endless and it’s something we do impress on prospective students at various higher education fairs. I am also working with state TV on a series that discusses current issues that affects youth.
Further Studies
In essence my plans are to complete my LLM and proceed to PhD. I believe undertaking the LLM will better the student experience in my role as an LPC tutor. Furthermore, I believe in helping students become independent learners with critical thinking skills.
This will help them in their university studies and eventual careers. I also intend to continue my networking to forge partnership with key stakeholders. This is something I am used to as I ran three law firms in London as a lawyer in the past.
