History, Politics & Economics, English, Geography Tutor Mitch

Mitch has a degree in History, Politics, and Economics from University College London. This year, he will be going on to study a MSc in Russian and East European Studies at the University of Oxford. Here’s a snippet of his tutor profile.

In addition to my ability to tutor Economics, English, History, Geography, and Politics, I am able to also extend my services to any students interested in university application guidance. Over the past 4 years, I have received 2 offers from UCL, 1 each from King’s College London, Durham, and Queen Mary London, and 1 from the University of Oxford.

In that time, I achieved a score of 31 in the LNAT (the average score that year was 23). I have also helped others, through personal statement advice, achieve offers from King’s College London for an MSc and from Exeter for a BA.

One thing that has stood out to me over this period of time is the significant differences in the application process for undergraduate courses and that for postgraduate courses. Whereas, at undergraduate, using the UCAS system, students are forced to write one personal statement for all of their choices, at postgraduate level one applies directly to the university of their choosing.

Thus, the personal statement, and any other materials required (I had to submit a writing sample, three references and my CV) are tailored solely to that institution. This makes the application process simultaneously more complex, but also, in a way, simpler: it affords students the chance to truly demonstrate their expertise in a specific field, rather than be forced to write a disjointed personal statement which attempts to please 4 or 5 different institutions and courses.

Throughout the years, I have come to possess deep knowledge of the best way to approach writing CVs, personal statements, writing samples and other documents throughout the application process. This is something that applies to graduate job and internship applications, as well as academia. Job applications are another area I am more than willing to offer assistance in.

Since the start of 2020, I have received graduate job offers from Deloitte and an international financial advisory company, an internship offer in the communications consultancy field, and invites to a final-stage assessments at an international healthcare technology firm and the Bank of England (which, unfortunately, I had to decline due to my MSc offer).

If you find yourself in the same position I did a few years ago – unsure of what you were going to do, and where, and stuck writing multiple applications. With time and practice, I’m sure you will achieve the offers you deserve. I’m confident I would be able to help along the way.
