Passion and belief

My passion is not only Law but being able to actively make a difference in a students educational endeavours. I can truly empathise with the hurdles faced by younger students. The COVID-19 crisis makes online learning even more paramount. This is particularly true for students who are neurodiverse or from low socio-economic backgrounds. I believe the wide breadth of skills I’ve acquired in my law degree, combined with my 5 years of tutoring experience, could be used to greatly aid your students.

My experience

I have worked as a part-time GCSE English tutor and 11+ tutor for 5 years. This helped accumulate extensive experience working with students from a broad spectrum of abilities and ages. I am flexible and adaptable as I have experience with both 1-1 sessions and small groups, taking roughly 15 sessions at the weekends alone. Throughout the course of the pandemic, I successfully transitioned to remote teaching on zoom. This unprecedented change not compromising the quality of the sessions as demonstrable by my near 100% client retention.

My approach

English is a difficult subject for many students to grasp, given its abstract nature. My approach is to provide an overview of the relevant text, typically using presentations and diagrams. Upon establishing the basics, I swiftly move onto the exam techniques. This is preparation to tackle a large task like approaching essay writing. I liken an essay to a tree diagram; the root of the tree acting as the line of argument (thesis) and the branches of the tree representing a paragraph. The purpose of such creative expressions is to engage my students and to ensure that students of all abilities understand the content being taught.

My results

The materials I use to aid my students are entirely my own. I write my own exemplary essays and paragraphs, covering all the assessment objectives. In my experience, providing students with plenty of exemplary material is what truly allows them to flourish as it gives them the ideal template. The key principle that I implement in my sessions, is to not limit a student’s capacity based on their current grades. I teach all my student’s equally instead of categorising them based on their ability. This is because I believe every student must be given an equal opportunity to achieve the top grade. I have found this to be a successful approach as the vast majority of the students go on to attain top grades. Many of them have passed their entrance exams at competitive schools, irrespective of their current grades when I started tutoring them.
