Description: Claire has a First Class honours degree in English / Creative Writing and can teach English up to undergraduate level. Here is an outline of her tutor profile
About Me
My name is Claire and after graduating with a First-Class Honours degree in English with Creative Writing from Queen’s University Belfast, I found my passion in tutoring as well as studying animation.
It was my experiences there that helped solidify my desire to support others who have stories of their own to share.
To me, teaching English is about facilitating that support.
I enjoy teaching immensely and have consistently been described as friendly, caring and helpful by past students and parents/guardians.
I work with my students to improve their skills, knowledge and confidence, and build a great rapport through fun and engaging lessons.
Currently, I am self-studying coding, and I hope to be able to offer coding lessons in the future.
One to one
I have a wide range of teaching experience, ranging from one to one to classroom and group teaching.
When working with any child in English (from KS1 to KS4) I first evaluate their current standard.
Based on that and discussion with the student and their parent/guardian, I devise a scheme to facilitate their confidence and language skills in reading, writing, spelling and speaking.
As a result of ongoing assessment and feedback, the work plan is modified.
I have one to one experience working with children from just starting primary school to studying A-Levels.
My main focus is on all elements of the subject including exam preparation.
It’s been a great experience to have also tutored undergraduate students, supporting them through their courses and equipping them with the skills necessary for their courses.
This includes lessons on how to structure and write an essay, which students find particularly helpful in the stressful transition period from secondary school to tertiary education.
Group Teaching
I have volunteered as a tutor working with a Year Six class on popular forms of creative writing.
We produced three projects throughout the year.
During the half-term break, the students studied poetry.
I worked with them on identifying and understanding language devices, rhyme schemes and types of poems (e.g. Acrostic and Sonnet), and the students each produced a Halloween poem using what they had learned.
During the Christmas break, the focus was on prose.
Building on the previous lessons in language devices, we also discussed how authors use language in order to create meaning in the text.
Lastly was informative writing.
Looking at biographies, we discussed the language features of informative writing.
We were then about to see the difference in facts and opinions presented through text.
The students worked on an illustrated fact file on the lifecycle of an eel. This is an animal with great importance to the local community.
I look forward to continuing my tutoring career and helping students achieve their academic goals with excellence.
