Description: Bethany has a First Class Honors degree and specialises in tutoring Classics and Ancient Greek. Here is an outline of her tutor profile.
About Me
I have recently completed my MPhil in Classics at the University of Bristol. My research comprised of an in-depth study of contemporary mythopoiesis in Percy Jackson by Rick Riordan. Particularly focusing on the reception of Classics and the influence of American identity.
The Percy Jackson series is what inspired my own journey and love for Greek Mythology from a young age. Through my studies in the same area, I have come to have a great appreciation for Classics. I would love to inspire the same interest in Classics and Ancient Greek as I have found, and to share my knowledge, passion and expertise.
As a freelancer, I also write articles on greek myth, history and art. My passion is writing about topics in a way that is engaging and informative to others.
I am an approachable person, with a friendly nature. I enjoy working with students one-to-one as I believe this is the most effective way to learn, as it allows full focused attention, with tailored content and teaching style to best suit the individual student.
Teaching Experience
I have an extensive array of experience in one to on tuition. During my time at university, I took part in opportunities to be part of outreach programs to schools. I was part of the University of Nottingham’s Museum volunteer group. I planned interesting games and lessons for children to learn about museum artefacts and historical context. This involved teaching groups and one-to-one sessions.
I have also worked with students at a range of academic levels on improving and editing essays through my online tutoring work. This involves discussing ideas, checking grammar, and offering constructive feedback. I also prepare them efficiently for upcoming exams such as GCSE and A-Levels. The key to success is to practise and make students aware of the mark scheme in order to achieve the highest grades possible.
I have been complimented on my ability to bring students out of their shells. As someone who was grown in confidence and assertiveness, I can really resonate with students who prefer one-to-one teaching. Some students do not feel confident in group situations so I make sure to build a strong rapport with them. I also feel that my passion for learning – particularly about history and classics – also helps me to engage and instil passion in others.
