Cambridge Graduate & English Tutor Penge

Description: Penge is an English tutor to students from age 9 upwards. He is also a mentor who delivers training in basic skills to young people between the ages of 19-25 and adults 25 and over. Here a snippet of his tutor profile.

As a mentor, I have assisted learners in their work, identifying barriers to their learning with the aim of setting targets that will enable those individuals to reach their potential. In the context of the work, it involves working with individuals so that they can pass exams and develop confidence to apply for jobs.

Apart from the mentoring (teaching, inspiring and guiding learners), I have also delivered employability courses, which entailed teaching students how to make CV’s and how to set out cover letters. These workshops kept the students enthused and increased their self-belief and confidence, which often culminated in some of them applying for jobs and getting interviews – whereas before many of them did not have this confidence.

As well as working with adults whose English is a second language, I have had the privilege to deliver speaking and listening workshops where adults who are learning English for the first time have an opportunity to practise speaking English, working on pronunciation. This workshop also helped them to develop their confidence.

The job has also helped me to grow as an individual, giving me the opportunity to stretch myself by exposing my personality and character to people who are otherwise strangers, and yet at the same time to develop a rapport with them so that they feel that they can trust me and confide in me in regards to their pursuits for employment. Ultimately, my role as a mentor in this environment has helped me to see that being a good mentor is not just about having sufficient academic skills and qualities but requires that an individual be warm, friendly, empathetic and also dedicated and committed to the people with whom he is working.

I am convinced that if given the opportunity to join your team, I shall be able to demonstrate the skills I have already developed and also at the same time contribute in bringing something new to the team, so that ultimately both service users can benefit from the service given to them, whilst also giving job satisfaction to the team.
