Description: Abbie is a Cambridge graduate Classics tutor who has experience teaching a wide variety of subjects. These include English, Classics, History and Language. She has a flexible and mindful teaching approach. Here is a snippet of her tutor profile.
I graduated from the University of Cambridge with a BA in Classics and have an MA in Arts and Cultural Management at KCL in 2019. In my spare time, I volunteer at a gallery/community arts centre and love to visit museums and exhibitions in London.
As a tutor, I specialise in ESL, English Literature and Language, Classics and Latin. I have helped many of my students pass school entrance exams. These include the 11+ and 13+ and IELTS.
I create my own lesson plans and resources and develop educational programmes and courses tailored to the needs and goals of my students. I also work as an Education Consultant for Babel Education and help to train and support their team of tutors. This includes checking and editing lesson plans and resources, giving teaching advice and helping tutors to effectively utilise digital learning software to engage students online.
Running a Latin and Classics club at a local primary school during my undergraduate studies was another fantastic opportunity to enhance my skills as a tutor. I enjoyed sharing my passion for ancient languages, literature and history with a group of bright, enthusiastic students. I planned the lessons and created worksheets and resources for them. It was also my responsibility to invent engaging, relevant activities. All this was crucial to effectively teach beginner’s Latin and Ancient History to KS2 students.
In the summers of 2016 and 2017, I worked as an English teacher in China. I taught students between the ages of 8-18. The work involved planning and delivering my own lessons and activities. It was important to ensure that my classes were fun and engaging, while also academically challenging.
I have also worked on the Reach Cambridge Summer Camp programme as a Student Supervisor. My responsibilities there included organising and running university application advice sessions, such as personal statement help and mock interviews.
I teach many students of varying abilities. This often means adapting the level and style of teaching to that which is most suitable for each student. I understand the importance of challenging my students intellectually while remaining supportive and encouraging. It gives me great satisfaction to see students develop in their confidence and ability.
