The Pomodoro Technique

Description: More Productivity, Less Procrastination – The Pomodoro technique. In this blog article, tutor Kirujan explores ways students who get distracted easily can manage time effectively and boost productivity.

If you can get distracted easily and not have a good attention span, the Pomodoro technique may be the solution for you.

This technique is a way of managing your time effectively and boosting productivity. There are 5 steps in this proven study method and it involves:

  • Selecting a task to focus on
  • Setting a timer for 25 minutes to work committedly on the chosen task
  • Once the time is complete, take a 5-minute break
  • Repeat steps 1-3 for more study sessions
  • After every 25-minute session, increase the duration of the break in increments of 5 minutes.

The Benefits

There are many reasons why the Pomodoro technique is beneficial and improves study habits.

It works on your ability to manage time by setting tasks to do within 25 minutes and prioritising them accordingly.

The 25-minute study sessions allow you to break down the work into small chunks that are more manageable.

It can help when there is a lot to do and you do not know where to start.

By allocating yourself a certain period of time for study, it improves focus and stops you from getting distracted by social media or other tasks.

This helps you to get more work done in a shorter period, avoiding procrastination and thereby reducing stress and anxiety.

The short breaks in between prevent you from overwhelming yourself with a lot of work and enhance memory by allowing the brain to be able to process and retain information more.

Planning Ahead

It is best to plan in advance what you will do in each of the 25-minute blocks so that you do not waste time.

This also includes planning the environment you want to be studying in.

This is crucial because the study sessions are meant to be focussed with no distractions.

Working Environment

A work environment can be created by moving to a quiet space.

You can turn off phones and devices and move anything that is not related to the task away from you.

You should actually make use of the breaks to prevent burning yourself out and use that time to have some water, eat a snack, meditate, stand up and stretch or go for a walk.

These suggestions help you relax yet feel refreshed to continue studying after the break.

Using a timer can help and when the timer goes off after a study interval or break, move on to the next session instead of prolonging it.

This will ensure that you stay on track.

Final Note

With the Pomodoro method, the length of study sessions and breaks are not strictly 25 minutes followed by 5 minutes.

If you feel that it does not work for you, the timings for each period can be adjusted based on what suits you best.

The key principle is to split work into smaller tasks which are designed to be focussed with no distractions and having breaks to relax and refresh yourself.
