About Me
I am a highly qualified and experienced teaching professional with a number of teaching strings to my bow.
Most of my professional life has been centred around teaching English in a British educational context.
However, I have been lucky enough to have been trained, to have travelled and to have worked in many different countries.
I believe this has made me versatile and thus able to empathise with people from all kinds of diverse backgrounds and ages, with varying educational expectations.
Apart from the UK, I have also lived in Australia, China, Malaysia and French-speaking Canada.
This has influenced how I approach my students, as individuals with differing needs and goals.
My Teaching Style
My lessons are tailored to fit the individual student, and my approach is most definitely student centred.
This means that from the outset I lay emphasis on listening carefully to the parent and/or individual student and making a clear assessment of current levels and goals.
From this, I will plan a course for the individual, which will be constantly reassessed over time.
I want you or your child to not only enjoy your lessons, but also to make progress, so this is a key part of my strategy.
Apart from teaching, I have a passion for walking, and so now spend as much time as I can outdoors.
I love the open spaces and fresh air and the chance to see Canadian wildlife close up.
I also love learning languages and am fluent in (European) French.
As well as Mandarin Chinese and a number of other Asian and European languages to lesser degrees.
Apart from English, I can teach French to the Upper Intermediate level as well as Elementary Mandarin Chinese. I am told I have a very credible accent in both languages. This ultimately can provide a solid language model for students.
My passion is teaching both children and adults alike. Guiding students to achieve their goals and watching them grow and succeed. I would therefore be delighted to have the opportunity to teach you or your child.
Teaching Experience
I have many years of teaching experience, including 3 years teaching in state primary schools.
This was followed by 11 years doing private English tutoring in Malaysia and in Oxford.
I started teaching English as a foreign language to adults in Oxford language schools (16+).
Apart from teaching general English from beginners to proficiency, I also taught academic English skills in university foundation courses.
In addition, I trained students on interview skills for Oxbridge entrance through interview techniques.
Over the years I have guided hundreds of students to achieve exam success in the IELTS exam, for which I was an examiner for 10 years.
I also taught beginner Chinese to students as an extra-curricular activity and gave lectures on various aspects of British culture on occasion.
I have taught online, teaching UK national curriculum English to children aged 7 to 14, general English and IELTS to teenagers and adults, as well as some elementary French.
While teaching online, I have also helped some children prepare for ISEB exams and am keen to do more of this if I can.
