Description: Science and Primary School tutor Arushi shares her thoughts on helping students with Dyslexia.
What is Dyslexia?
Dyslexia involves difficulty in learning to read and interpret letters, words and other symbols. In this article, I will be outlining some ways used to help students with dyslexia. I have previously taught a student with dyslexia and I believe there is not just one way to help them. It requires many little and consistent measures. There have been many teaching methods that have seemed to help and assist. I believe the most helpful one is having a compassionate teacher. A teacher who is cognizant and tries to increase their student’s sense of self-worth and self-confidence.
Experience
One particular exercise I used to carry out with my student was after explaining a task, I would regularly ask them to explain it back to me. This would ensure they had understood the task. Doing this exercise made them more confident and certain about what they were asked to do. As a result, they were able to finish the task quicker. Whenever attempting questions, my student also read the questions out loud. This aided them in processing and understanding the question better as if they were unable to read it correctly, I was there to help them.
Boosting Confidence
To further boost their self-confidence, whenever we tackled comprehension questions my student would take turns with me reading the paragraphs in the passage. This allowed them to achieve more reading practice and also helped them improve. As well as this it also helped them understand the passage to answer the questions later on.
Being Supportive
Undoubtedly, supporting the student, helping them whenever possible and going above and beyond for them are some of the key attributes of a compassionate teacher.
The tutors present at Telios Tutors essentially possess those and many more righteous qualities, to support students with learning disabilities and dyslexia; and parents with any questions they may have about their child’s progress and development.
