Give your Child the Gift of a Second Language

Description: Qualified Primary Teacher and Language specialist Rosalind describes how you can give your child the ‘World’ with the gift of a second language.

As a child, my Mother, who was bilingual, and bringing us up, by passing on her languages to us, was accused of creating ‘confusion’ for us. Undeterred, she continued in her quest to pass on one of the most valuable gifts: communication in a second language.

Fortunately, learning a foreign language as a child has in recent years become more and more valued. It is not merely a set of skills to allow you to communicate effectively in another country. Its benefits stretch far beyond that.

Research has also shown a link between language learning and one’s ability to organise oneself and one’s activities. Linguists are more than likely to be able to focus on the task that requires immediate attention, and to plan ahead, filtering out any interference. Prioritising, in other words.

A Knowable magazine article discusses the benefits of bilingualism. It states that it can help to “…control, direct, and manage your attention, as well as your ability to plan.”

What better time than this, to help your child to gain a new set of language skills, hand in hand with a set of organisational skills, by learning French? To know a second language is truly a lifetime gift.
