Most students who dislike a subject at school is usually when they feel incompetent at it. This can be due to a variety of reasons, whether it be a non-positive classroom environment or receiving a bad score in a test. Usually their belief system is limited to the notion that they are simply “no good with numbers” or “not a creative person”. Lack of confidence in a subject is often a belief that they have derived at due to past experiences.
The good news is that: competence is something that can absolutely be obtained, and competence will ultimately lead to confidence.
How can I help my child become better in a subject?
Getting better in anything will take time, dedication and a level of commitment. It is important to address what the root of the obstacle is. For example, if it is lack of focus, perhaps changing their regular environment would prove to be helpful. Maintaining attention span is mandatory, and so giving them a space where they can concentrate well is very important. If traditional learning methods have not effective, try encouraging learning interactively or by watching educational videos. If your child is finding difficulty memorising and digesting information, perhaps encourage them to condense a large text by summarising it on flash cards. In our last post, we spoke about the different learner types, which may be useful in addressing when it comes to ways in which you can help enhance your child’s educational experience.
Sometimes experimenting on your own can be both time consuming and frustrating, especially if you are not sure of how to approach the situation. After all, parents are not expected to be teachers too! Having a personal tutor can speed up the learning process and efficiency dramatically. Having a tutor who is positive and motivational can give them the guidance and confidence boost they need to really believe in their potential. The undivided attention with a specialist tutor who your child can interact with can truly transform their attitude, which will inevitably lead to better performances in that subject.
